On the Tyrrhenian side of the Peloritani Mountains , at 320 metres a.s.l, set in a wonderful natural amphitheatre, there is Roccavaldina , a little town with an ancient history. According to the official historical background, its origins date back to the late Middle Ages, when the town was called Rocca. Valdina was in fact added to the original toponym only later, in honour of the Aragones, homonymous noble family that ruled the fief for several centuries. However, a legend tells about a more ancient origin. In fact, one of the numerous brave Roman tribunes, during the Punic wars, might have founded the first inhabited nucleus (pagus) of the present Roccavaldina.
