On the Tyrrhenian side of the Peloritani Mountains , at 320 metres a.s.l, set in a wonderful natural amphitheatre, there is Roccavaldina , a little town with an ancient history. According to the official historical background, its origins date back to the late Middle Ages, when the town was called Rocca. Valdina was in fact added to the original toponym only later, in honour of the Aragones, homonymous noble family that ruled the fief for several centuries. However, a legend tells about a more ancient origin. In fact, one of the numerous brave Roman tribunes, during the Punic wars, might have founded the first inhabited nucleus (pagus) of the present Roccavaldina. |

The fall of the Western Roman Empire had opened the way to the Barbarian invasions, but Byzance, to which the island was assigned after the division of the Empire, sent the famous leader Belisario who, stopped the invasors after a memorable battle, just near the “pagus” that was recalled “Casale del Conte”, name remaining still now in the local toponymyc. Around the XVIII century, the Saracens took the place of Byzantynes. Inevitably the Casale changed its name again and it took the Arab toponym “Rachal Elmerum”. After more than a century of Mussulman government, a new ruler came: the Normans , that after various events dominated the whole island.
