Capuchin Convent

Another important architectural example is the Capuchin Convent.

Complesso conventuale dei Cappuccini

Built in the 17 th century, it was a splendid building, a place of culture and spirituality, but today only part of the beautiful cloister and the annexed chapel era standing up to the wear and tear of time.   Originally, the convent belonged to the Padri Conventuali Riformati of Messina and its name was St.Cecilia; the Church, was, at first, dedicated to San Giovanni Battista; later to San Francesco d'Assisi and the Filippini Orator was annexed to it.

After the Reformation of Pope Sisto V, the Convent was deserted and suppressed. The citizens thought that was a good occasion to bring in the Capuchins, so the relevant request was sent to the Holy See, together with the permission from the Father Conventual. In 1627, the Capuchins were legally allowed to enter the convent thanks to the bull of pope Urbano VIII. The Bull became executive on 19 th 1627. the friars took possession of the convent on the day of St. Matthias Apostle ( February 24 th ); after a solemn procession and sermon a Cross was erected outside the Convent in the very site where it still is and which marked the boundaries of their jurisdiction.

Two years later, 1629, the friars started the construction of the church in conformity with their own model, that is larger than the Churches annexed to other convents. In 1865 the new Reformation suppressed the Capuchin convents. In may 1885, Mister Mariano Visalli bought the ex Capuchin Convent of Roccavaldina from the State Property Office; in 1897, he sold it to the town Council. In 1908, during the earthquake, the northern wing of the convent was destroyed and only the Church and the Rectorate remained intact.

Recently the cenoby has been restored in order to bring it back to its former magnificence. The area all around it has been given over to a public park and has been equipped with free time facilities while respecting the original typology of the place. Especially in summer, the Capuchin site, is the fixed destination of the Roccesi's evening walks, but also the centre of social and cultural meetings, since the most important musical and drama events of the season are held there, in the arena built in the park.
