The Castle

The Castle represents the most important historical and architectural element of Roccavaldina. It is a stately construction originally built as a defensive structure and, in a second time, enlarged andturned by the Valdinas noble family into a princely residence.

Il Castello di Roccavaldina

Still today we can clearly distinguish the two different parts of the castle: one side shows its military origin characterized by the essentiality of its structure, and the added side, with different characteristics and a precise artistic purpose, probably in the style of the famous Tuscan architect Camillo Camilliani. It is difficult to date back the oldest part of the castle, because the documents and the sources are not sure. But, through the original elements still present, like the windows on the first floor and the balcony above the front door, in the main structure that overlooksthe square Umberto I, the building probably dates back around the earlyXVI century. The cylindrical towers on the sides of the fortress were probably added to the pre-existent construction afterwards.According to the building rules of the time, the military area of the castlehad to be a quadrilateral, while thepart used as a residencea parallelepiped. However, because of the incomplete conditionof the two constructionsand because of its repeated remaking, the building today is a strange mixture, a sort of hybrid between a fortress and an aristocratic residence. Regarding the style, it is inexplicable the coexistence of two types of battlement: it is Guelph in the main structure, while it is Ghibelline on the sides. According to the art critics, it might be the result of a sort of anarchy in the buildings, so diffused in the minor architecture of the time.

In the structure on the ground floor, it is still presentits original military function and there are both billetsand small prisons. The area of the castle , used as a residence, built later than the military part, as said before, was drawn near through an unusual system of suture; an inside yard and a beautiful arcade, that overlooks it, with cross vaults and decorative elements such as ashlar ribs and capital-shaped shelves.

Outside, the volumetric rigour of the walls in the area used as residence is harmonically mitigated by stupendous balconies, some of which are angular, supported by big shelves, where mannerism starts its fusion with the rising baroque. Damaged by the earthquake in 1908, the castle was only partially restored. In particular, it was rebuilt the south-east part intended forresidence for the heirs of the Valdinas noble family. The castle is private property still today, even if the municipal administration has been trying for a long time to buy and make it a museum open to the public.
